On March 20-24, 2019, American Lee Academy International School (Shanghai) ALAIS students participated in the 2019 Harvard Model United Nations China competition in Beijing.

Harvard Model United Nations (HMUN) is an opportunity for students to gain a deep understanding of international relations and use their problem-solving and critical thinking skills to work with other students to propose resolutions to address some of the most significant global challenges in the world.

According to Model United Nations, HMUN China “strives to foster a constructive form for open dialogue on complex issues, including international peace and security, and economic and social progress,” by collaborating with students from around China to propose resolutions to make the world a more peaceful place.

What the Student Think 感想

The ALAIS students spent months preparing for the competition with social studies teacher Matt Rose, who, according to grade 9 Kai, “taught us how to write a position paper, resolution paper, and the formal process for Model UN discussion,” which helped the students be successful at the event.

Model UN is also an excellent competition for preparing students for the skills necessary for success in university, “including leadership, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking skills” (Stephen, Grade 11) Stephen also sees his participation in HMUN China as a valuable experience for the future because it taught him the importance of “diplomacy and communication, including persuasive writing and speech and working with others to compromise in finding solutions to the world’s biggest problems.”

对于学生未来进入大学所必备的技能储备，模联比赛也是一个极佳的锻炼。“包括领导力、团队合作、问题解决技巧和批判思维技巧”，11年级学生Stephen说。此外，Stephen也认为此次模联中国活动对他的未来也是极为宝贵的经验，因为他学到了“关于外交和交流的重要性，包括有说服力的写作、演讲以及与他人合作达成协议来解决世界瞩目的问题。”

ALAIS has participated in HMUN China for the last two years and has big plans for expanding its Model UN program to include more students in sharing this valuable experience and in preparing them with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in university and beyond.
