深受自己父亲的影响，Derek Hamm和父亲做出了同样的选择，成为了一名教师。Derek是一位非常具有教学热情的数学老师，在美国和中国都有着丰富的教学经验，他于2019年8月加入了美国Lee Academy高级中学(上海校区)教学团队。以下是Derek Hamm专访。

记者：What attracted you as a teacher to ALAIS?作为一名教师，是什么吸引你来到ALAIS?

老师 ：I chose ALAIS because of the types of students I knew I would find in an artistic school environment. I love seeing how creative students come up with their own unique approaches to solving problems. Students often present ideas about certain problems that I would never think to do on my own, and that is an exciting environment to teach in.

我选择在美国 Lee Academy高级中学(上海校区) 执教是因为我相信在这样的一所具有艺术特色的学校里，我将有机会遇见不同的学生群体。特别是在数学课堂上，每当我看到具有艺术创造力的学生用充满创新的形式来解决问题的时候，我都会感到非常惊喜。ALAIS的确有一个让我倍感兴奋的工作环境。

记者：How does UbD help your curriculum and instruction, and how do you think it helps students best understand?UbD在你的课程和教学中起到什么样的帮助作用?你认为它如何帮助学生更好地实现理解?

老师：UbD helps curriculum because it sets students up with a goal in mind. Instead of piecing together bits of notes and new material in hopes that it will grow into a larger understanding, we start with the larger understanding and work backwards, building on previous knowledge with new information. It helps students focus their learning with a clear goal in mind.

UbD有助于课程设置，因为它让学生在自己的头脑中事先设定好一个目标。现在，我们不再需要把零散的笔记和新的学习材料拼凑在一起，希望它有朝一日能让我们形成一个真正的理解。现在我们是从那个真正的理解开始，用既有的知识，加上新习得的信息，逆向对其进行实施。它帮助学生在心中有一个明确目标的前提下，集中精力推进学习进程。

记者：What is the most important lesson you have learned as a teacher at ALAIS?你作为一名教师，在ALAIS中学到的最重要的一课是什么?

老师：The most important lesson I learned is that you must be willing to work hard and be patient, and if you put your trust into the supportive leadership and staff that surrounds you, you will be successful.

我学到的最重要的一课就是你必须愿意努力工作，对学生有耐心，如果你信任周围支持你的领导和员工，你就一定会成功。

记者：Describe one highlight of your time teaching at ALAIS?描述你在ALAIS教学的一个亮点?

老师：For many years, my life has revolved around my love of music. I was very excited, therefore, to be asked to lead the Band Club. To see students who share the same passion for music as I do is great to see. I hope I can transfer some of my passion for music to them in their creative expression.

我一向热爱音乐。因此，非常荣幸被邀请来负责领导我校乐队俱乐部，对此我感到非常激动。遇见和我一样热爱音乐的学生真是太棒了。我希望我可以把我对音乐的热情传递给他们，激发他们更多的创意灵感。

记者：What are your goals for your students?你对学生的期望是什么?

老师：My hope is that every student leaves my classroom more prepared for their next year of education than when they arrived. Some students will make small improvements, while others make large ones. But as long as each student is moving in the right direction, then I am happy.

我希望每一个学生在离开我的教室的时候，都比他们刚刚来的时候收获了更多，都对下一学年的学习有了更加充分的准备。有些学生会做出小的改进，而有些学生会实现大的进步。不管怎样，只要每个学生都在朝着正确的方向前进，我就会心满意足了。
