Throughout China, parents and students have so many choices for international education. Which is the best option for your Child?
The ALAIS Dean of Academics, Elliott Greer, is the product of an A-Level education in UK. His experience as a student in A-Level schools and as a school leader in an American college prep high school provide a unique perspective on the differences between these two educational systems.
Mr. Greer found the A-Level curriculum scripted and test-based and not focused on developing the essential skills for success in universities – critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and creative thinking skills.
Another benefit Mr. Greer values is the flexibility in the American curriculum. “One of the major differences I appreciate at ALAIS is the range of different subjects and courses students can take that enable them to pursue their academic and professional passions. From my own A-Level education, I did not have the option to take the courses in which I was most interested.”
Additionally, Mr. Greer felt limited by the test-centered approach to A-Level education. Education, he thinks, “should reflect the skills required to face the challenges of the 21st century.” As an expert in Understanding by Design (UbD), he sees how meaningful authentic assessments (AA) are over preparing for exams, because they provide real-world applications of knowledge to help students understand more thoroughly, not just pass exams.
Mr. Greer’s final reflection on his experience as the Dean of Academics in an American college prep high school is that, “the 21st century requires innovation in education to allow students to pursue their academic and professional passions while teaching them the skills necessary for success in university and beyond.”
Historically, American college prep education has prepared students for opportunities to study in universities around the world. Principal Josh Holt and Lee Academy school in the US, South Korea, and Shanghai, have graduates who have studied in top universities in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. As Principal Holt often tells students and parents, “Why limit your options? High school is a time to BROADEN options for the future, not limit them.”
